Uncanny X-Men 466

Psylocke (Elisabeth Braddock), Nightcrawler (Kurt Wagner), Shadowcat (Kitty Pryde) and Marvel Girl (Rachel Grey) fly back to New York following their adventures in the UK (see New Excalibur).

But Rachel isn't returning to the X-Mansion.

Following M-Day (where 98% of all mutants lost their powers), Cyclops (Scott Summers) has allowed the government agency O*N*E (Office of National Emergency) to protect the school and the remaining mutants seeking help here. Now the grounds are surrounded by Sentinels.

Kurt and Betsy question Scott's judgment on the situation.

Rachel gives Kitty a hug and explains that her grandparents have invited her to stay with them. Considering Ray grew up in a future where Sentinels hunted and killed mutants, and she was forced to help them do it, seeing them surrounding the school is too much for her. She finally has a real family with the Greys. (Rachel first met her grandparents in this timeline at Scott & Jean's wedding in X-Men 30 and they probably invited her to visit them when she saw them at Christmas in X-Men 165.)

At the Xavier Institute, O*N*E has all of the mutants under constant surveillance. A mutant refugee camp has been set up on the grounds for the roughly 198 remaining mutants.

At the Grey's home in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY (roughly 30 miles north of the Institute), Rachel plays basketball with her grandfather, John, in the driveway, and can't resist the urge to use her powers to do a spectacular slam dunk.

Her grandmother, Elaine, watches on and applauds. She tells them it's been a long time since she has heard so much laughter. John asks Elaine to join them, but she reminds them that they have company coming.

Elaine goes inside and starts working in the kitchen. She sees a picture of Jean on the refrigerator, then looks outside at Rachel playing ball with John. She sighs, thinking of much Rachel reminds her of Jean. She wants to cherish her grandchildren, but she misses her daughter and curses Xavier for drafting Jean into the X-Men.

Outside, Rachel can't help picking up on her Grandma's thoughts and how her grandma is remind of loosing Jean every time she looks at her.

Her grandpa tells her the grief will eventually pass as the love she feels for Rachel grows. he decides it's time for a change of scenery.

At the Institute, Psylocke jogs around the grounds and does yoga while all of the Sentinels (which are piloted by Army guys) watch on.

Kurt and Cannonball (Sam Guthrie) are fishing nearby on the lake, speculating on what the Sentinels are doing. Kurt gets a phone call from his alternate reality daughter, Nocturne, who's concerned about the Sentinels, and Sam blasts off. Sam flies right into Betsy, who was mediating in mid-air. He keeps buzzing her, and she eventually kicks him into a Sentinel, who threatens him.

Things aren't going much better around the rest of the Institute. Bishop monitor's Sage's cyber networks in the carriage house, but is only receiving more bad news. Storm hasn't returned from Africa, so her loft is being used by mutant/lawyer Vange Whedon and reformed anti-mutant terrorist Marie D’Ancanto on a way to get rid of O*N*E through the legal system.

Meanwhile, Scott and Emma Frost meet with government officials including Colonel Reyes (who commands the military units stationed at the Institute), O*N*E's assistant director Valerie Cooper, and a doctor from the Center for Disease Control. (The doctor is investigating whether M-Day could have been caused by a disease and could pose a public health concern.)

On the astral plane, Emma and Scott discuss the situation. O*N*E has psi-blockers preventing them from having their thoughts and minds read. Scott has purged Cerebra's records so the depowered mutants can't be found.

Val wants them to call off their lawyers and tries to convince them that the Sentinels are only there to protect mutants.

Reyes outlines the rules - complete access to the school files and Sentinels will be assigned to accompany anyone leaving the school grounds.

Meanwhile, in Annandale-on-Hudson, Rachel and her grandfather at a grocery store. At the checkout stand, Rachel sees a Sentinel on a cover of a magazine and her grandfather asks why she looks so frightened of it.

Rachel explains that the Sentinels she knew weren't so friendly. John asks if she wants to talk about it, but she refuses.

As they load groceries into the car, John tells her that it isn't her fault that she survived and gives her a hub.

A short time later back at the Grey’s home, Rachel is in her room, talking to Kitty on the phone while getting ready for the party. She wants Kitty’s advice on what to do and is nervous about meeting the whole family. Her grandparents have invited over the entire extended Grey family to a family reunion to meet her. She’s upset since they all will remind her of their counterparts in her future who all died.

Kitty tells her this is her chance to catch up on everything she missed out on and to just lighten up and have a good time. Rachel wishes Kitty was there and they joke about where Kitty would park the Sentinel that would have to escort her.

Nervously, Rachel goes out into the living room were dozens of members of the Grey extended family are gathered, trying to convince herself that they have to like her since they're her family.

Later on, things at the party are going well and Rachel is actually having fun.

Outside, something mysterious watches the front porch.

Rachel mingles with her family. Several people who are distantly related to her discuss the mutant problem and how no one can tell who is a mutant. Rachel sarcastically suggested branding mutants. To get Rachel out of that conversation, Terry Maguire wishes Rachel outside to the front porch.

John interrupts, telling Rachel he was promised a dance. But Rachel is quite comfortable about that, since she doesn't know how to dance. John says how remarkable her telepathy is and he wished he knew how to cope with it better. Rachel replies that they did a great since Jean saved the world. John asks Rachel what’s wrong and she admits she doesn't know how to dance.

Her grandfather tells her it would be his pleasure to teacher her. Just as they start dancing, John is blown to pieces as Rachel looks on in horror and screams.
